Allah's Beautiful Names
By the end of this lesson, children can say six Names of Allah ๏ทป with their meanings, match each Name to a moment in their own life, and use a Name when they make dua.
Before you teach
Allah ๏ทป says: "And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them" (Quran 7:180). The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Allah has ninety-nine names โ whoever learns them by heart will enter Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736; Sahih Muslim 2677). Teachers explain that "learning them by heart" means more than memorising sounds: know the Names, understand what they tell us about Allah ๏ทป, love Him through them, and call on Him by them. This lesson plants that seed with six Names a child can use straight away.
The lesson
- 1
Hook โ names tell us about someone 4 min
Ask: "If you heard a friend called 'the Generous' or 'the Brave', what would you expect them to be like?" Names describe. Then:
"Allah tells us His Names so we can know Him โ who He is, how much He loves us, and how to ask Him. Today we learn six of His ninety-nine Names properly, with their meanings." - 2
Teach โ six Names, six pictures 10 min
Introduce one Name at a time: say it together, give the meaning, then the "picture" โ a moment the children already know:
- Ar-Rahman โ the Most Merciful. His mercy reaches everyone and everything: rain falls on every garden; every baby animal is fed. Before anything else, He named Himself the Most Merciful โ every surah but one begins with it.
- Ar-Raheem โ the Especially Merciful. A special, extra mercy for the believers who turn to Him โ like a family's special kindness inside the home.
- Al-Malik โ the King. Everything belongs to Allah ๏ทป and He rules it all โ the sky, the seas, every kingdom. And He is a perfectly fair King.
- Al-Khaliq โ the Creator. He made everything from nothing: every snowflake different, every fingerprint unique โ including yours.
- As-Salam โ the Source of Peace. All safety and calm come from Him. When we feel scared or the world feels noisy, He is the Peace we turn to. It is why we greet each other: as-salamu 'alaykum.
- Al-'Aleem โ the All-Knowing. He knows everything: what happened, what will happen, and even the kind thing you did that nobody saw.
- 3
Activity โ which Name fits? 8 min
Read each situation; children hold up the Name card (or call out) that fits best, and say why:
- "You wake up and hear rain watering every garden in town." โ Ar-Rahman
- "You tried your best in a test and nobody noticed โ but Someone knows." โ Al-'Aleem
- "Thunder at night, and you want to feel safe." โ As-Salam
- "A ladybird lands on your hand โ no two are exactly alike." โ Al-Khaliq
- "You ask Allah to forgive and take extra care of your family." โ Ar-Raheem
- "The whole sky, the moon and every star belong to a King." โ Al-Malik
- 4
Play 5 min
Play the Names of Allah ๏ทป game: children guess each Name from its meaning clue. Encourage them to whisper the meaning aloud before guessing letters โ the meaning is the point, not the score.
- 5
Close โ call on Him by His Names 3 min
Model one short dua using a Name, then let volunteers try: "Ya Rahman, have mercy on everyone who is unwell. Ya Salam, keep my family safe. Ya 'Aleem, You know what is in my heart โ help me choose well." Finish by repeating Quran 7:180's instruction together: call upon Him by His beautiful Names.
โ Check for understanding โ ask these three
- "Which Name tells us Allah knows everything โ even secret kindnesses?" โ Al-'Aleem.
- "What is the difference between Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem?" โ Ar-Rahman's mercy reaches everyone and everything; Ar-Raheem is His special extra mercy for the believers.
- "Make one dua using any Name from today." โ Any sincere example counts, e.g. "Ya Khaliq, thank You for the beautiful world You made."
๐ฑ Make it easier (ages 5โ6)
Teach three Names only โ Ar-Rahman, Al-Khaliq, As-Salam โ each with its picture and a gesture (arms wide for mercy, hands making a star for Creator, hands on heart for peace).
๐ฟ Make it deeper (ages 10โ12)
Add Al-Ghafoor (the Most Forgiving) and An-Noor (the Light). Discuss: how does knowing Al-'Aleem change how we act when no one is watching? Older children can find one Name in the Quran and report where it appears.
