Wudu, Step by Step

By the end of this lesson, children can wash for prayer in the correct order, explain in their own words why Muslims make wudu, and say the dua that is said after it.

Before you teach

The wording you will teach. The order of wudu below follows the description of the Prophet's ๏ทบ wudu narrated by Uthman ibn Affan (ra) (Sahih al-Bukhari 164; Sahih Muslim 226). Schools differ on a few small details โ€” follow the practice your own school teaches and simply skip any point of difference in this plan.

"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." โ€” the dua after wudu.
Source: Sahih Muslim 234 โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ said whoever makes wudu completely and says this, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him. Many also add: "Allahumma-j'alni minat-tawwabeena wa-j'alni minal-mutatahhireen" โ€” "O Allah, make me among those who repent often and those who purify themselves" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55).

Why we make wudu โ€” the one idea to land: salah is meeting Allah ๏ทป in prayer, so we come clean and ready. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught that when a Muslim makes wudu, sins are washed away with the water (Sahih Muslim 244) โ€” wudu cleans the body and the heart at the same time.

Wudu โ€” the steps in order

Nine steps, always in the same order. Point, copy, practise โ€” and print this page to tape by the sink.

The lesson

  1. 1

Hook โ€” the mystery guest 4 min

Ask: "If a very special guest was coming to our home, what would we do to get ready?" Take three or four answers (tidy up, wash, best clothes). Then connect it:

"Five times every day, we stand in front of Allah in salah. Wudu is how we get ready to meet Him โ€” clean hands, clean face, clean heart."
  2. 2

Teach โ€” the order of wudu 8 min

Walk through the sequence slowly, miming each action in the air while children copy you. Say each step's name out loud together:

    1. Intention in the heart, and say Bismillah.
    2. Hands โ€” wash both hands three times.
    3. Mouth โ€” rinse three times.
    4. Nose โ€” sniff water in and blow it out, three times.
    5. Face โ€” wash the whole face three times.
    6. Arms โ€” wash to the elbows three times, right arm first, then left.
    7. Head โ€” wipe over the head once, then wipe the ears.
    8. Feet โ€” wash to the ankles three times, right foot first, then left.

Memory anchor: "Hands, mouth, nose, face โ€” arms, head, ears, feet." Chant it twice together like a marching rhyme.

  3. 3

Guided practice โ€” at the sink 10 min

In pairs or small groups, children make real wudu while a partner reads the steps from the printable sequence (or from memory). Swap roles. Your job is to circulate and praise specifics: "You remembered right side first โ€” exactly right." Keep it unhurried; confidence matters more than speed. Remind them not to waste water โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ made wudu carefully with very little water (Sahih al-Bukhari 201).

  4. 4

    Play & print 5 min

Project or hand out the Wudu Steps Challenge game: children drag the steps into order against their own best, not against each other. Then give each child the printable sequence sheet to colour and take home for the bathroom wall.

  5. 5

The dua after wudu 3 min

Teach the dua at the top of this plan by echo-reading: you say one short piece, they repeat it, three times through. Explain the meaning in one sentence: "We announce that Allah is One and Muhammad ๏ทบ is His Messenger โ€” the most important sentence we know." Tell them the promise in Muslim 234 in simple words: Allah ๏ทป opens the gates of Jannah for the one who makes wudu well and says it.

โœ… Check for understanding โ€” ask these three

  • "What is the very first thing we do before washing?" โ†’ Make the intention and say Bismillah.
  • "I washed my arms. What do I wipe next, and how many times?" โ†’ The head โ€” wiped once (then the ears).
  • "Why do we make wudu before salah?" โ†’ To come clean and ready to stand before Allah ๏ทป in prayer.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 4โ€“6)

Teach only the big movements โ€” hands, face, arms, head, feet โ€” with the chant. Skip counts and the full dua; teach just "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah" as the finishing line.

๐ŸŒฟ Make it deeper (ages 9โ€“12)

Ask what breaks wudu and what wudu teaches about water waste and cleanliness in daily life. Older children can learn the full dua with its addition (Tirmidhi 55) and lead the echo-reading for younger ones.
